Mindfulness-Based Approaches
Developing greater awareness, calm, and compassion in everyday life.
Mindfulness-based approaches in therapy help people develop the ability to notice thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations with greater awareness and balance. Rather than becoming overwhelmed by difficult experiences, mindfulness helps create space to observe what is happening internally and respond more intentionally.
Many people move through life on “autopilot,” reacting quickly to stress, worry, or self-critical thoughts. Mindfulness practices help cultivate the ability to pause, become present, and respond with greater clarity and steadiness.
Mindfulness has roots in contemplative traditions, particularly Buddhist psychology, and many modern therapeutic approaches have adapted these principles in ways that are practical and accessible. In therapy, mindfulness is not presented as a religious practice, but as a set of skills that support emotional balance, self-awareness, and resilience.
Mindfulness-based work may draw from several approaches, including:

Buddhist-Informed Mindfulness Practices
These practices emphasize awareness of the present moment, observing thoughts without becoming attached to them, and cultivating qualities such as equanimity, compassion, and acceptance.

Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC)
MSC helps individuals develop a kinder, more supportive relationship with themselves, especially during moments of difficulty, failure, or self-criticism.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
MBCT combines mindfulness practices with cognitive therapy strategies to help people recognize patterns of rumination and develop healthier ways of relating to thoughts and emotions.
Through mindfulness practices, clients often learn how to:
- Recognize and step back from repetitive thinking
- Regulate emotional reactions more effectively
- Increase awareness of body sensations and stress signals
- Develop greater self-compassion and patience
- Respond to challenges with greater balance and perspective
Mindfulness practices are introduced gradually and adapted to each individual’s comfort level. They may include brief awareness exercises, grounding practices, breathing techniques, and reflective exercises that can be used both during and outside of therapy sessions.
At Focused Solutions Counselling, mindfulness approaches are integrated in ways that support greater calm, emotional resilience, and a deeper sense of connection to yourself and your life.
