Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a structured, skills-based approach that helps people learn how to manage intense emotions, navigate difficult situations, and build healthier relationships. Originally developed to support individuals experiencing significant emotional dysregulation, DBT has since been widely used for concerns such as anxiety, mood instability, impulsive behaviour, and interpersonal conflict.

At the heart of DBT is the idea that two things can be true at the same time—you can accept yourself as you are while also working toward meaningful change. This balance between acceptance and change is known as the dialectical approach.

DBT focuses on developing four core skill areas that help people respond more effectively to emotional challenges:

Distress Tolerance
